An App for Enhancing Attention in Children
Attention, in simple terms, is a focusing of the mind on something. It is necessary for the activities children do in daily life, especially in learning. With the current advanced technology where different activities can happen simultaneously and instantly, it is getting more difficult for children to have the patience to focus on a task and to finish it. Parents often believe that their children’s issues in learning can be solved with intervention programs to improve attention. Wouldn’t it be good to have an app to train /improve attention? Attention seems to be a critical underlying factor affecting children’s learning. However, could it be the opposite whereby the learning activities affect the children’s attention?
In this webinar, the factors affecting attention from the perspective of sensory processing will be discussed. Participants will also be given suggestions to enhance the attention in their children.
Workshop Objectives Participants will be able to have an awareness of –
1. The contributing factors for attention
2. The possible strategies that can improve attention in children

Curiously Social Investigators (CSI)
Learning to be sociable is an ongoing process. This programme draws concept from Socially Curious and Curiously Social ® by Michelle Garcia Winner. It aims to teach your child basic building blocks to be “we thinkers” instead of “me thinkers” in a fun and interactive way. It also aims to challenge them to be “cognitively flexible” so they are able to “share space” with others, and “follow the group plan.” We aim to do this by teaching them to be “social investigators” so that they can use their power of observation to notice others, take in social clues and change their own behaviour.
Additionally, we will be working on digital friendships – how to differentiate between “friendly” and “friendship” by defining different levels of friendship. We will also teach teenagers who have social anxiety on how to help themselves reconnect with people. It is not just talking but to think about others’ thoughts and feelings when we communicate.
Lastly, as young teens going through puberty, having a positive self-concept leads to healthy development. We will work towards promoting a growth mindset in our teens and aim to build their self-esteem. We teach these objectives through age-appropriate leisure activities.
